I’ve even hauled out Christmas Santa Sideburns Onigiri-man to bring in the cheer. Onigiri-man has evolved over the years that he’s been the JustBento mascot, and now he has a goatee instead of sideburns. But originally, he was firmly stuck in the ’70s.

- Ebelskivers (Danish Pancakes) With Lingonberry Jam | Serious Eats : Recipes – The Scandinavian countries really have a way with pancakes. My first introduction was with the Swedish pancake mix from Ikea. You might balk, but it actually makes deliciously thin, crepe-like pancakes that we'd pair with lingonberry jam for special Sunday breakfasts. A trip to Finland cemented my love—the pancakes there were baked, not cooked on the stovetop, but they had the same delicious buttery balance. No heap of bland dough. No overwhelming syrup. Just awesome pancakes all on their own.
The Danish version, ebleskivers (also transliterated as aebelskivers), are just as unique and just as delicious. Instead of lying flat, these pancakes are more like pancake pockets—fluffy, light-as-air rounds of dough that can be filled with everything from fruit preserves to Nutella to cheese. I like them with, yes, lingonberry jam (OK, I'll come out and say it—I freaking love this stuff). Lingonberries have the perfect tartness to make the pancakes, with their dusting of powdered sugar, taste more sweet.
The trick to ebelskivers, aside from having an ebelskiver pan, is to make sure to butter the wells and have something long and pointy on hand for turning. It may not be authentic, but my preferred tool is chopsticks, which easily flip the delicate dough. Another hint? Don't pass the syrup. The dough here is buttery with a hint of salt, and if your filling is tasty, the pancakes will be too. Confectioners' sugar adds the perfect extra touch of sweetness (and makes them wonderfully wintery to boot.)

- Bocaditos de Corn Flakes y Leche Condensada (Corn Flake Clusters) | Serious Eats : Recipes – Instead of Rice Krispies treats, many Latin Americans grow up eating these (no-bake!) clusters of cereal, sugar, and sweetened condensed milk. At a glance, the recipe appears too sweet, but the burnt sugar adds nuance and complexity to these irresistible morsels.
- Kaleidoscope & Coda 2 – Stale Coffee – Today I did some googling because I heard it was possible to use Kaleidoscope as the default diff tool in OS X which would effectively integrate it with Coda 2 and any other app that would bring up the system default diff tool.
- Chocolate Kix Toffee Bark | Serious Eats : Recipes – There's something wonderfully nostalgic about cereal-based desserts. I still remember my first taste of a Rice Krispie Treat. I was in kindergarten at a PTA meeting for parents and new students. I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. Since then I've discovered chocolate and peanut buttery treats like Scotcharoos and Chex Muddy Buddies. While Kix was a favorite cereal in our house growing up, I've never tried it as a dessert until now.
Flipping through my well worn copy of Betty Crocker's Cooky Book, I came across a recipe for Kix Toffee among the "Company-Best Cookies" recipes. Your "company" doesn't need to know that this recipe is stupidly simple. All you need is butter, brown sugar, Kix, vanilla, a pinch of salt, and some chocolate. Like a crispy, crunchy cereal-based version of my perennial holiday favorite Chocolate Crack, this is a recipe to break out when you've got that holiday party or cookie exchange and you're low on time. I promise they'll be going for seconds (and thirds).
